A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of American actions.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in positions just before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other platform users also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.
Politicians are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.
Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to political events.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.
Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
