Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such treatments must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
